Spring Walk at Hay Bridge with Mike Johnson.

WI at  9.15am or Hay Bridge CP at 10.00am (SD336876)

Bring packed lunch. 

Members free but non members of Hay Bridge will be expected to make a donation. (This may be done by the society from the donations collected on the day)

The Insects of Wood and Meadow.

Old Park Wood, Hutton Roof with Steve Garland. 

WI  at 9.30am or Hutton Roof village at 10.00am (SD570781)

Meet at southern end of Hutton village to go to Old Park Wood, the flower rich meadow adjacent.  Moth trap, weather permitting.  Take packed lunch.  Net/specimen jar also helpful! SG

Summer Migrants in Borrowdale with Pete Moreton. 

WI at 9.00am or 10.30am on the Grange to Hollows Farm Road (NY252173) 

5 miles fell path and tracks with some easy climbing

The day consists of a walk along the Borrowdale valley from Grange to near Seatoller following low fell paths and returning along the river. Distance about 5 miles. Some modest amount of climbing and descending, including one steepish section. Fell paths and tracks. Target species -  summer migrants including cuckoo, pied flycatcher, redstart, wood warbler and garden warbler.

Trowbarrow Quarry with Dougie Watson, AONB,

WI at 9.45am or 10.00am at Storrs Lane, NE of Causeway, opp. side of road by kissing gate into golf course.(SD48023 75368)

Parking either at Leighton Moss and walk if you are a member or on the road side near the start.

Half day trip. 

Carry a flask and food if you feel hungry before 1.00pm when we expect to be finished

Mon 15th

Botany walk on Warton Crag with Roger Spooner. 

WI at 10.00am or 10.15am at Warton Crag Main Quarry CP (SD491723)

Roger hopes to get to the top of the Crag then wander down so lunch would be advisable (but trip could easily be cut short if weather or people want).  Might even find Clausilia dubia (an uncommon type of snail) at the top!

The Orchids and wildlife of Hutton Roof with Bryan Yorke 

WI at 9.30am or 10.00am in lay-bys on Clawthorpe Road (SD543 782)  

Some rough areas on the 3 mile walk to see orchids together with their variants and hybrids.  Also birds and butterflies.  Full day so bring packed lunch.  Boots or similar essential. CW

Mon 6th

Birds, butterflies, flowers, dragonflies at Hodbarrow  with Ian Brodie.  

WI at 9.15am, 10.30am at RSPB car park.  (SD176790)

Walk around 3-4 miles mostly on tracks and quite level.  Can go whatever the weather as plenty of flora.  Maybe time for coffee in Millom before start? 

Lunch will be taken in bird hide. 

Directions to RSPB car park: on entering Millom turn left over the railway bridge, immediately after the station, into St George’s Road.  Go down this road, pass the shops and public toilets, and then right into Mainsgate Road.  At end of this straight road turn left on track to CP.

Directions:  Off A590, signed Levens.  At Hare and Hounds pub bear left and go straight through the village to Brigsteer road and park at the Wood entrance

Butterflies of White Scar & Farrar’s Allotment,  Whitbarrow. 

WI at 10.00am or 10.30am park on former A590, near turning to Raven’s Lodge Farm (SD46856511).           

Farrar’s Allotment is located on the south east end of Whitbarrow Scar.  From either direction along the A590 turn off this road (from Barrow direction) at the last turning left before or the first turning right after (from Kendal direction) the A5074 Lyth Valley road (SD466852).

Meet the second (top) gate on The Row (SD475752). 

Limited parking on site, so suggest park at RSPB Leighton Moss and walk across. (RSPB members only).

‘Who said there are no birds in August?’  Local birding with John Webb.

 WI at 9.00am or 9.15am at Wolf House, Silverdale.  Jack Scout, Jenny Brown’s Point…

“August is a waste of time”.  “You never see any birds in August”.  So, what can we see locally?  Morning walk to Jack Scout, Jenny Brown’s Point, embankment to Eric Morecambe hide, return via Heald Brow.  Approx 3.5 miles
