The Society was started in the 1960's and is involved in all aspects of natural history. With a membership of approximately 200 the society is active and enthusiastic, collecting records on birds, mammals and other vertebrates, botany and insects . Within the society there are recorders for these areas who are extremely knowledgeable.

The members are drawn from a large area but the majority live within the Arnside and Silverdale AONB, which extends from the River Kent in the north to the River Keer as its southern border west of the A6.

The Society runs an extensive programme of field trips covering a wide range of natural history subjects. From April to September these are organised on a weekly basis, with day visits to sites in North-west England. Additionally, there is normally a week long residential trip, which has alternated between locations in the UK, and abroad. Over the last 10 years locations have ranged from North Cumbria to the Isle of Wight, and Arctic Norway to Southern Spain. From October March there are monthly birdwatching field trips, with day visits to a variety of locations. During the last 10 years there have also been 3 residential birdwatching trips of 3 5 days in Dumfries and Galloway.

The Society holds a series of monthly indoor meetings from September to March at the WI Hall in Arnside.  These feature guest speakers covering a large range of wildlife topics.

New members and visitors are warmly welcomed to both indoor meetings and field excursions.
